Clinical trials are closely monitored medical research studies that evaluate new ways to prevent, detect, or treat disease. The goal of clinical trials is to determine if a new drug, treatment, or test works and is safe. Clinical trials can also look at other aspects of care, such as improving the quality of life for people with chronic illnesses.
Clinical trials provide hope for many people by offering new treatments that are not widely available, contributing to moving science forward, and helping researchers find better treatments for patients in the future.

Why Should I Participate? Information for research participants
What is a clinical trial?
Cancer clinical trials are research studies in which participants with either a high risk for cancer or a cancer diagnosis help physicians find ways to improve health and cancer care. Many of today’s standard treatments are based on the results of past research studies.
Trials are typically divided into four phases:
- Phase I: Tests safety and best dose to be given.
- Phase II: Determines efficacy of the drug.
- Phase III: Compares the investigational drug with standard drugs.
- Phase IV: Monitors the long-term safety of the drug.
Is a clinical trial right for me or my loved one?
If you have been diagnosed with cancer, feel that you are at high risk of being diagnosed with cancer, or if you are a cancer survivor, ask your doctor if a clinical trial is right for you. Each cancer clinical trial has strict eligibility rules about who can and cannot participate. These criteria sometimes include age, a specific type of cancer or biomarker, previous treatments, and other specifications. Those criteria ensure the safety of study participants while at the same time ensuring that the trial can answer the important question. Look for the eligibility requirements in the official description for each study.
Is being in a clinical trial risky or unsafe?
Talk to your oncologist to see if a trial is right for you. We’ll give you all the information you need to know about benefits and risks and ask you to complete a thorough consent form prior to your therapy.
What will it cost me?
Any treatment or test required by the clinical trial is free to the patient. Some procedures or tests that are considered standard of care would be billed to your insurance. We will explain what is provided and covered by the trial as part of the informed consent process.
If I enroll in a clinical trial, can I change my mind?
You can leave the trial whenever you want, even if you’ve already started.
