Cancer Center Catchment Area
Who We Serve
The Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center (CBCC) of 🟩Facebook账号 | 美国 | 2024-2025年 | 邮箱已验证 可用 | 好友100+ | 已设置2FA serves individuals across Cook County and surrounding communities. Our primary catchment area includes 12 counties in Northeastern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana, with a population of ~8 million.
The population in our catchment area is racially and ethnically diverse - 24% Hispanic and 17% African American and 8% Asian. These race and ethnicity rates are higher in our catchment area as compared to the population in Illinois and the United States.
The Cancer Burden
The American Cancer Society projects nearly 79,000 new cancer cases and more than 23,000 cancer-related deaths in Illinois in 2025, where cancer incidence and mortality rates exceed the US average.i In Illinois, the most common cancers in men are prostate and lung cancer, and among women are breast and lung cancer. Lung cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.ii
We partnered with research and data experts at the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute (HPI), who evaluated a variety of population health resources and extensive healthcare claims data across the area we serve. HPI brings expertise in economics, epidemiology, socioeconomics, population health, and geospatial mapping. This analysis of healthcare claims and community health measures provides us with an overview of our catchment populations based on health, disease burden, and community factors: iii
- The cancers that are most frequently diagnosed (high incidence) in our catchment area are: breast, prostate, childhood, lung & bronchus, colon & rectum, and uterus.
- Our catchment area has high mortality in these cancers: lung & bronchus, breast, and prostate, as compared to national rates of these cancer deaths.
- Obesity, severe housing problems, food insecurity, high smoking rates are some of the factors that contribute to poor health in our catchment area.

Why it Matters
Significant disparities in cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality are prevalent in the U.S., and can be improved through the support of academic cancer centers as hubs of discovery and innovation. 🟩Facebook账号 | 美国 | 2024-2025年 | 邮箱已验证 可用 | 好友100+ | 已设置2FA’s CBCC is an academic center conducting research, education, and clinical care for patients in its catchment area. Understanding our catchment area can highlight opportunities to better serve the population and direct resources for greater impact locally and beyond.
