Q&A with Jamie Capatillo, Assistant Director for Leadership and Social Justice

Q: Hi Jamie! What does CSIB do for students?

What doesn’t CSIB do? We offer many different mentorship programs for students who are interested in building a supportive community on campus. Students who apply to our mentorship programs are paired with faculty, staff, and other students to guide them through their time at Loyola.

Our mentors are students who once needed the same support new mentees are looking for, and they want to pour that love and care into you. Whether you're crashing out at 2 a.m., you don't understand how to register for classes, or are wondering about your major, these mentors are here to help guide you and send you to the resources that can help figure it out.

On top of that, we do a lot of fun, engaging programs. We like to let our student leaders inform this program, encouraging them to think about what our students and their communities need to hear and want to see. And then we go wild – we dream big, and we imagine what our campus needs and make it happen.

Q: What programs does CSIB offer to students?

We look at what our mentees are experiencing and use that to think about what programming is needed, which means what we offer can vary widely.

We host come-and-go programs, like an off-campus mental health resource fair where clinicians and practices come to talk to you about insurance, finding long-term mental health care, and navigating mental health care on- and off-campus.

We just want to have fun sometimes, too. A lot of our students are really loving arts and craft expressions. That means one month, we might do a painting event that asks students, what would your life look like as an album cover painting?

We also host larger events, like the STARS Block Party, where different cultures come together and celebrate, as well as Mosaic Breaks Bread, which looks at how we build community through shared meals.

Whether it's a small or large scale, come-and-go or you stay for the whole time, we are always looking for something fun, creative, and engaging for our students where they can leave having gained something.

Q: What skills will students gain from participating in CSIB?

CSIB lives out Loyola’s Jesuit value of Cura personalis, or care for the whole person, in everything we do. Students build skills that center both personal growth and community. That can look like active listening, community care, boundary setting, conflict mediation, and facilitating workshops and trainings.

Students can also gain a deeper understanding of different forms of community and cultural wealth, like linguistic and navigational capital, and how to lead in ways that are grounded, relational, and rooted in care.

Q: How can students get involved with CSIB?

Come in! We're in Damen Student Center 116, right across from the Starbucks in the atrium. Whether you need a place to study, relax, or just exist for a bit, our space is for you. Our resource room has comfy chairs, a microwave, a fridge, coffee and tea, and you will see students doing everything from homework to coloring, napping, doing their makeup, singing, or playing games.

We also have mentorship opportunities for the 2026-27 academic year that will be opening soon – keep an eye on our website and follow our to know when applications open!

Whatever you need, you can always walk in and experience it for yourself.

Q: What’s your favorite part about working in CSIB?

Being on a team with people who share similar identities, values, and even a sense of humor. Life can feel really heavy right now. Having a team that empowers you, supports you, shows up for you, and makes you laugh through it all makes such a difference.

I also love working with our student leaders and graduate interns. They are some of the most creative, funny, and brilliant people I’ve met and remind me that a new generation of doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, politicians, and artists is coming – one that truly cares about community and each other.

Q: What’s one thing most students don’t know about CSIB?

I’ve heard some students think you can only come into our space if you work here, but that is not true at all. Our resource room and programming are open to all students and are truly spaces for the entire Loyola community.

I have especially loved seeing upperclassmen come back to our programs and spaces. That is exactly what we hope for: a community that our Ramblers want to return to. So, if you are reading this, stop by our resource room or come to our next program to be in community with us.

No matter where you are in your Loyola journey, there’s a place for you here, so come as you are. Your community is ready and waiting!
