The Women in Science (WINS) student group at the Health Sciences Campus is a student organization focused on supporting and encouraging the next generation of scientists. Studies have shown that while about half of currently enrolled biomedical and medical graduate students identify as female, there is still a gender gap in leadership positions and other STEM disciplines (1, 2). This gap starts in middle school where it has been reported over twice as many middle school boys express an interest in a career in STEM (1, 2). WINS was founded with the purpose of promoting and maintaining an interest in science in this age group through two major outreach initiatives: Science Sister’s Day and The Quinn Center Experiment Series. For Science Sister’s Day, WINS partners with local Maywood middle schools and invites students to the Loyola HSC campus for a day of experiments, learning, and fun! For The Quinn Center Experiment Series, WINS partners with the Quinn Center of St. Eulalia and their after school program to host weekly science experiments for their elementary and middle school participants.
