Teaching and Learning Minor

Are you interested in learning about the work of educators, as well as the foundational knowledge of school-based services? The Teaching and Learning minor is for you. This minor is for LUC students who are interested in the work that takes place in education systems and settings serving children birth through grade 12, but does not carry the extensive specialized requirements of a teacher licensure program.

The Teaching and Learning minor provides access to foundational field-based learning experiences in our undergraduate teacher education program to students in other majors who are interested in schooling and in working with teachers, educators, and/or families but who do not intend to work as classroom teachers themselves.  It is ideal for students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, as well as anyone else who would like first-hand experience in the education system.

As a Teaching and Learning minor, you will complete 13 hours of field-based learning experiences (in schools and other settings across the city). In addition, you will enroll in 6 hours of Education elective courses. You can select from a host of courses across several interest areas such as early childhood, museum education, individualized student supports, the special education system, or child and adolescent literature. You can also complete a semester-long internship in a setting that fits your interests.

Our Commitment to You

With a Teaching and Learning minor from Loyola, you will possess the following knowledge, skills, and professional values to enhance your work as a professional in your chosen degree area.

Knowledge

You will develop a deep understanding of the foundations of developmentally appropriate teaching across many types of educational settings. You will learn about the skills and dispositions of effective educators and explore policy and practice in serving diverse children and families. Plus, you will have opportunities to engage with diverse populations, including students with special needs and those labeled as English language learners.
