John Slania

Associate Dean

Professor of Practice

John Slania’s service as a faculty member and administrator in the School of Communication has included duties as Acting Dean, Director of the Journalism Program, and his current role as Assistant Dean.

He is a veteran journalist who spent nearly 20 years as a newspaper reporter and editor, including positions at the Chicago Tribune, Milwaukee Journal and Arlington Heights Daily Herald.

At Loyola, Slania has helped develop the journalism major and several community engagement initiatives, including delivering a four-year journalism curriculum at Senn High School in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood.

Slania and his students have developed several journalism projects that focus on community engagement in Chicago.

Mosaic Magazine, a social justice publication founded in 2004 that explores important issues in the city's neighborhoods, such as violence, homelessness and education.

Rambler Roundup, a weekly television newscast that highlights news and events at Loyola produced by students in the SOC’s Media Fellows program.

Loyola Longform is a book publishing project that allows students to profile newsmakers in Chicago, with their stories and images printed in a hardcover book. The series includes the titles, Working in Chicago, Coming to Chicago and Living in Chicago.

Slania is deeply involved in student engagement projects, primarily as the faculty advisor for the SOC Media Fellows program, a cohort of gifted communication students who spend their four years at Loyola taking classes together and participating in professional development opportunities, special events and activities, travel, internships, community engagement and service projects.

Slania also organizes more that 10 high school field trips to the School of Communication each year. These field trips enable high school students to learn what it’s like to be a broadcast journalist, working in the SOC television studio and using video equipment to conduct street reporting in Chicago’s Gold Coast.

Slania holds a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in Communication and English from ♒Discord账号 | 三绑 - 带头像 | 2月-6个月 | 邮箱不可用 | 2fa/token登录.
