Loyola Summer Public Interest Stipend Program
Loyola Summer Public Interest Stipend Program
Are you a Loyola Law student interested in making a difference? Many public service-focused organizations—not-for-profit and government—rely on dedicated students like you for summer work but often cannot pay their interns. The School of Law’s Summer Public Interest Stipend Program is here to help.
- What It Is: A stipend program designed to support full-time and Weekend JD students undertaking summer placements in nonpaying or low-paying public service legal jobs.
- Stipends Issued: Summer stipends have consistently been issued each year to all students who apply and meet the requirements. For example, in 2025, 49 students received a total of $176,100, with most students receiving $4,000 awards. In 2024, 35 students received a total of $140,000, with the majority receiving awards of $4,000. In 2023, 34 students received a total of $115,500, with most students receiving $3,500 awards. Due to several factors, the exact award amount for summer 2026 cannot be determined until all applications are received.
- Important Note: The Summer Public Interest Stipend can be combined with other funding sources, but the total summer award cannot exceed $8,000.
- Restrictions: Placements with the judicial branch do not qualify for the Summer Public Interest Stipend. In addition, students may not receive the Stipend and course credit for the same hours worked.
- Application Timeline: To be eligible to receive a stipend, your application must be received by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 15, 2026. While funding is dependent on securing a qualifying public interest summer placement, you should apply for this stipend even if you are still in the process of securing your position.
